THE weekend has been cold and South Africans are normalising getting friends with benefits.

They don’t want any strings attached. They just want to poke, cuddle and go back home.

This isn’t new but it seems this cold weekend increased the number of people who wanted to do this.

People have been sharing their cellphone numbers on social media trying to get that person who’ll keep them warm.

Talking to Daily Sun, Mapaseka Mokoena said she’s been single for a while and still wants to remain single, but she wants a poking partner.

“I can’t be living in my cold apartment alone when South Africa is full of men who can keep me warm,” said Mapaseka.

Karabo Mabiletsa said she’s also tired of acting like a saint. She wants a poking buddy who won’t stress her about relationship problems.

“I’ve always judged people who have friends with benefits but I now understand that it’s better to have that kind of a friend than being in a toxic relationship,” she said.

Mpumi Zondo said she always has a poking partner but the last one she had caught feelings and she had to break up with him.

“I took a break after that, but I now miss having one. It’s really cold and I won’t pretend like I don’t need a poking partner. I just hope they won’t catch feelings,” said Mpumi.

Mweli Masilela said he also wants a poking partner while he looks for the love of his life.

“Maybe as I’m busy with poking partners, I might actually find the person I can spend the rest of my life with,” said Mweli.

Sifiso Mpanza said he’s been that person who always relied on sex partners, so this wasn’t new to him.

He said his only problem is that some of the ladies end up catching feelings and he’s not ready to be in a relationship with anyone.

“I’m still working on some things in my life. So I don’t need any person who’ll be demanding good morning and good night texts,” said Sifiso.

Sex expert Karabelo Malepe said friends with benefits relationships have become increasingly common over the last few decades.

“Friends with benefits often follow a different script in the real world than they do in the movies. People can have very different motivations and expectations for their friends with benefits, which can lead these relationships down many possible paths,” said Karabelo.

She said, however, the movies do get one thing right – navigating a friends with benefits relationship tends to be complicated.

“Most of the time, these turn into relationships,” said Karabelo.

Daily Sun spoke to people who currently have poking partners.

Lungelo Mkhize said he has a sex partner and it’s been going great.

“We’ve been doing this for six months and she understands what we are and she hasn’t bothered me about feelings, so it’s great,” said Lungelo.

Sesikie Masilela said she also has a poking partner and strongly recommends this to those who’re not ready for relationships.

She said she hasn’t had a boyfriend in two years, but her punani is not dry.

“I’ve had different sex partners and when they start talking about relationships, I leave. I’m not ready for that. I’m still happy with just poking with no strings attached,” said Sesikie.

South African Weather Service spokesperson Hannelee Doubeli said showers and thundershowers will develop in some parts of the Eastern Cape, Northern Cape and the Free State.

“The cold front is expected to be better by Tuesday, but rainfall is expected later this week in some parts of Eastern Cape, KZN, Northern Cape and the Free State,” said Doubeli.

Doubeli has also advised stock farmers to move their smaller livestock to shelter to keep them safe.
