EXPANDED Public Works Programme employees are gatvol of outstanding salaries.

They picketed outside Avalon depot in Joburg on Thursday, preventing Pikitup trucks and employees from leaving.

Jabulani Mhlongo (31) told Daily Sun his February salary made him feel humiliated.

“I got paid R100 and I don’t know what I’m going to do with this money because it won’t even last me a day,” he said.

Jabulani said he had expected more than R3 000 a month but that wasn’t what happened. He said other workers had not been paid since December.

“We have families to look after and with the amount we got, most of the workers won’t be able to cover their basic needs,” he said.

Themba Mnisi (33), another worker, said residents of Joburg should prepare themselves for a waste backlog and their bins piling up.

“Our contracts are ending next month and here we are fighting to get our salaries for the past two months. We demand that the city give us permanent posts so we can deliver quality services,” he said.

Pikitup spokesman Muzi Mkhwanazi told Daily Sun they were aware of the issue.

“Their time sheets were submitted late and in some cases with not enough information to process payment,” he said.

Mkhwanazi said Pikitup was working hard to resolve the matter.

“Payments are made according to a work sheet that indicates the time an employee has worked and in this instance, the payments made reflect the number of days and hours submitted,” he said.

“With respect to the blockage of gates at Avalon depot, Pikitup is working with law enforcement agencies to resolve the matter. The workers have been engaged to try and explain the issue.”
