TWO bodyguards of a well-known coal businessman are behind bars.

They were arrested in Boksburg in Ekurhuleni on Monday, 13 September, for skipping a red light.

They were busy escorting their boss when cops tried to stop them, but they sped off instead.

Constable Justice Ramaube of Boksburg North cop shop said police officers then called for back-up and gave chase.

“The businessman was apparently travelling with his wife in a black SUV Mercedes-Benz, guarded by two black BMWs in the front and back.

“The businessman was driving without a registration number plate, and the cars were flashing silver lights.

“It was further alleged that when stopping them, the bodyguard driving behind all the cars instructed the car in front not to stop.

“This did not sit well with the police and they mobilised back-up, which led to the cars being stopped.”

Ramaube said when conducting a search, cops discovered that one of the bodyguards was carrying an unlicensed firearm loaded with 15 live rounds of ammunition, but he failed to produce a valid gun licence.

“He was immediately arrested and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition while the other bodyguard was arrested for interfering with police duties.”

Ramaube said the businessman was issued with a ticket for failing to display a registration number plate.

The suspects will appear in the Boksburg Magistrates Court on Wednesday, 15 September.
