FORMER Orlando Pirates left-back Patrick Phungwayo (33) made a public appearance on Thursday 18 November, but sadly it was not on the football field.
He appeared in the dock of the Joburg Magistrates Court facing hijacking, housebreaking and possession of an illegal firearm charges.
Phungwayo appeared alongside his co-accused David Sekgobela (46).
The matter was postponed to Monday 22 November, so that the investigating officer could verify their addresses.
The postponement was also for Sekgobela to get legal representation, as Phugnwayo was the only one with a lawyer.
Phungwayo’s lawyer asked that the matter be postponed to Tuesday so that they could start the bail application on Thursday.
The two will spend the weekend in police custody until their bail application.
Daily Sun previously reported that according to the Hawks, they had received information about a gang of men using an Audi during hijackings and home invasions in the Gauteng suburbs.
The gang was spotted and intercepted by police when they entered residential premises and were arrested.
The Hawks said three firearms, housebreaking implements, gloves, balaclavas and a stolen TV set, as well as cellphones were found inside the vehicle. There was also a stolen Audi and a Kia Picanto with false registration plates.
The footballer is no stranger to controversy, as he found himself in trouble with the law before.
He was arrested in May 2017 after seven days on the run, eventually handing himself over, and charged with assault and attempted murder.
