RAGING flames on Sunday left a family of 10 stranded.
Luckily, no one was home when the seven-roomed house in KwaMashu’s N section, north of Durban, caught fire.
The family lost everything in the fire and they are sleeping at their neighbour’s house.
Family member Lucky Mthembu (26) told Daily Sun they were visiting their sister at her flat in Newlands East for the weekend when they got a call from neighbours to rush home as there was a fire.
“We were shocked to find the house on fire. We couldn’t believe our only home was burning down,” he said.
He said neighbours tried to put out the fire, but failed and called firefighters.
“We don’t know what caused the fire, but it looks like it started from one of the bedrooms,” he said.
Lucky said they lost clothes, food, school uniforms, birth certificates and IDs.
“We had already bought school uniforms and stationery for my sister’s kids, but these were all burnt in the fire,” he said.
Lucky said they’d be happy to get help from anyone.
“Our parents died. I’m the eldest in the family. We would appreciate any donations,” he said.
Councillor Simon Khuboni said he would attend to the family soon.
