COPS in KZN have warned people to stop keeping their stokvel savings under mattresses.
The warning came after Daily Sun published a story on 5 December where a man was killed and three others hurt while sharing their stokvel money.
The incident took place at Thenjane Village in Umkomaas, south of Durban.
About 50 members of a local stokvel group were counting money when four armed men entered the house and opened fire. They fired shots at the members, killing one of them.
The three injured are fighting for their lives in hospital.
A stokvel member said more than R200 000 was taken by the thugs.
Police gave businesses and saving groups some tips:
- Electronically transfer stokvel money into members’ accounts.
- Alternate days and times on which you deposit cash.
- Avoid carrying money bags and briefcases.
