PROPHET Shepherd Bushiri and his wife Mary are expected in Lilongwe Magistrates Court today for their extradition case.
This after the couple fled the country illegally while on bail. They were arrested in October alongside three others for fraud amounting to over R100 million.
They were released on R200 000 bail and some of their bail conditions were that they could only be allowed to travel within Gauteng and North West until the case was finalised.
The couple also had to report at the nearby police station on Mondays and Fridays between 6am and 6pm. But a week after their arrest, the couple fled the country to their home country Malawi, saying they did not feel safe in Mzansi.
In a statement, Bushiri listed several demands South African authorities needed to meet before they could return to Mzansi.
The couple handed themselves over to Malawian police after a warrant of arrest was issued by Interpol, but Lilongwe Magistrate Viva Nyimba later released them unconditionally, stating their arrest was unlawful as there was no formal request from South Africa.
Mzansi authorities made a formal plea to have them extradited back to Mzansi.
Meanwhile, Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi confirmed that his department had the names of the officials who issued the Bushiris passports to help their escape from South Africa.
At a question and answer session in the National Assembly on Wednesday, 3 March, he said the investigation into how the couple escaped the country was still ongoing, which meant the identities of the officials could not yet be revealed.
