President Ramaphosa said unemployment is the biggest problem affecting Mzansi currently but there are no shortcuts to fix it.
He urged South Africans to be patient as he deals with the matter.
Ramaphosa said this during question and answer session in Parliament on Thursday.
“Unemployment in our country is unacceptably high we have identified it as the biggest risk our country is facing at the moment, and this is particularly so amongst young people and therefore we are moving forward with various interventions,” he said.
The president said that last year, he embarked on the youth employment project whichc is gaining traction as lots of young people are taking part in it.
He said the job summits are also attempting to address the unemployment challenge.
Ramaphosa said this while responding to ANC MP Judy Hermans who asked the president about the measures in place to address the poor performance of the South African economy and the continuing job losses driving unemployment to an 11-year high.
The President however said there is a need for patience as there are no shortcuts to address the matter.
“There are no quick solutions to no growth and unemployment, this is an important part that we should be aware of,” said Ramaphosa.
He said the interventions which Mzansi have used to deal with economic growth is not the same with that of other countries that have got money.
“We did say that this is a package with South African characteristics, it was not your typical stimulus plan which is akin to what is done in other countries. Of course, in other countries they have a lot of money and they pump the money into the economy to stimulate the economic activities and growth as well as to stimulate demand. In our case we must reprioritise and come up with measures and these interventions take time to gain traction,” he said.
