THEY had just buried a loved one and mourners had gathered for an aftertears party.

However, a drunken driver almost caused another tragedy.

According to residents of Nellmapius extension 1 in Tshwane, a car with four passengers hit a street light and wall after the driver was seen making several trips to a squatter camp to buy beer.

One passenger apparently fainted after the accident, but woke up after the other three poured water over him.

Resident Rose Mmethi (43) said the car was driving at a very high speed. She said the other three threatened residents who came out after the crash.

“They said those who wanted to live should get back into their houses and stop filming on their phones,” she said.

Rose said after the passenger woke up, the car went back to the party to deliver beer and was again seen speeding off.

“I think they were afraid we would call the police,” Rose told Daily Sun.

“They damaged the light, but the wall was just scratched.”

Bethuel Masanabo (50), another resident, said he was disappointed in the drunken driver and all the mourners.

“We’re in a pandemic. Why are they hell bent on having an aftertears party even when they’re breaking the law?” he said.

He said he was glad no one died as it would have been devastating for the family that had just buried a loved one.

No police or emergency services attended to the scene and the car sped off after the accident.

Gauteng police spokesman, Captain Kay Makhubele, said residents should open a case.

“Even though the street light doesn’t belong to them and is owned by the municipality, they should have called the police, so there can be a proper investigation,” he said.
