CATTLE are a serious problem in this area.

Motorists who use the N3 between Pietermaritzburg and Durban told Daily Sun yesterday they said they’ve been reporting the problem to traffic officials, but nothing happened.

Truck driver Dumisani Ngwenya (50) from Newcastle, who drives between Durban and Joburg, said he sees cows on the road near Cato Ridge west of Durban all the time.

“They’re always on the road. This is a disaster waiting to happen,” said Ngwenya.

Motorist Bheki Sosibo (34) from Pinetown works in Pietermaritzburg.

He drives on the N3 every day.

“When I pass Cato Ridge, I see cows grazing on the roadside and sometimes they cross to the other side.

“The only solution is for government to fence the road to avoid accidents.”

Road Traffic inspectorate spokeswoman Zinhle Mngomezulu said traffic cops are called all the time to remove cows blocking the road.

She blamed livestock owners for not looking after their animals.

“We’re worried about this. Sometimes we impound the cows and owners come and pay for their release.

“We’ll ask our senior officials to take the matter to the agriculture department because it’s their responsibility to deal with livestock,” Mngomezulu told the People’s Paper.
