ONE person has been killed in a shootout between cops and thugs in Halahala village outside Malamulele in Limpopo.

The incident happened soon after they robbed a local shop in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Police spokesperson Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said it is alleged that three suspects robbed a shop owner of his car, cash, cigarettes and airtime at gun point.

Cops found the suspects located at Mapapila village where they had allegedly parked the robbed car next to a local tavern that they were reportedly planning to rob.

The police waited next to this stolen motor vehicle and within a short space of time, the suspects started to shoot at the police who retaliated and then, one suspect was fatally wounded, the other two evaded arrest and disappeared into the darkness.

Ngoepe said the preliminary Police investigations at the crime scene led to the recovery of the one firearm with 14 rounds, the robbed items including cash amount of money and the car which was robbed at Halahala from the shop owner.

According to the cops a manhunt for the remaining suspects continues.

The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba lauded the cops for their sterling work.
