THE Council of Education Ministers has suspended all contact sports in schools with immediate effect.

The decision was taken in a virtual meeting held this morning, 19 May.

Education spokesman Elijah Mhlanga said: “During the last week of term one, school sports activity-related Covid-19 outbreaks in Gauteng were reported and have been gradually increasing in term two.”

Despite following protocol, contact sports still contributed to the spread of Covid-19.

The outbreak response team had said the risk was high, especially with people who didn’t live together.

“In this regard, all sporting activities have been suspended with immediate effect until the cluster outbreak is over with no further cases reported, including preparatory school sports,” he said.

“The department will continue to monitor the situation. A government gazette will be issued with a notice in the coming days,”

Noncontact training in schools could continue provided social distancing, hygiene and safety measures were observed and there was no physical contact between participants.
