POLICE Minister Bheki Cele has assured Thulani Shangase’s family that no stone will be left unturned in finding his murderers.
Cele and his deputy Cassel Mathale were visiting the family in Pietermaritzburg, KZN, on Wednesday, 20 October.
The EFF candidate councillor was gunned down in Herwood on Sunday, 17 October.
“Part of my visit is to assure the family that we will find the killers,” he said.
Cele said the police would investigate all the circumstances surrounding the killing.
“We just need a little bit of space for the investigation to continue smoothly,” he said.
He revealed that all the voting stations in the country had been profiled, and those considered high risk for political violence would have heavy police presence.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Sifiso Shangase said: “We urge people to learn political tolerance towards one another.
“We believe this killing had everything to do with politics.
“People must learn to respect the fact that we choose to affiliate ourselves with political parties of our choice.
“We’re praying that this will be the last incident of a candidate councillor being killed.”
The SunTeam learnt that while Shangase joined the EFF shortly after it wad formed, his family members remained in the ANC.
During Cele’s visit, the South African National Taxi Association leadership in the area distanced itself from the murder as Shangase had previously owned a taxi.
The association said it had a good relationship with him while he was still in the industry.
Cele also visited the police station, crime scene and other parts of the area to meet residents.
