THE EFF in the Mopani district in Limpopo wants Ba-Phalaborwa local municipality to take responsibility for fraud and corruption allegedly taking place in the municipality.
Regional secretary Bazooka Hlongwana said the municipality needed to account for the irregular payment of R1 million.
When Daily Sun contacted municipal officials, they didn’t deny the allegation.
Municipal spokesman Jonas Mahesu said: “The council is aware of the matter and it was referred to the municipal public accounts committee.
“The committee has requested an extension to deal with the matter. We’ll respond to all media questions after our first council sitting.”
But Hlongwana called for an independent investigation.
EFF district chairman Pontsho Mashumu alleged that some companies
“The municipality had projects to refurbish the Namakgale Stadium and build culverts in the Makhushane and Lulekane areas of Phalaborwa,”said Mashumu.
“However, some companies started the construction project in an improper way.
“These clear acts of fraud and corruption rob potential bidders of the opportunity to pitch for tenders.”
Party leaders had said they’d engage with the provincial and national government to ensure that action was taken and measures put in place to prevent misconduct.
Mashumu said residents of Ba-Phalaborwa deserved better service delivery, and that the issuing of tenders should be transparent.
