A MAN was arrested on Monday night for possession of an illegal hunting rifle and ammunition in an intelligence-driven operation led by the Calcutta police task team.
The 46-year-old suspect was travelling from Hluvukani Village in Bushbuckridge to Kruger National Park, when he was stopped by police at Rolle Trust outside Thulamahashe.
Brigadier Leonard Hlathi said the police received a tip-off on Monday afternoon about a Nissan NP200 bakkie heading to the park.
“The vehicle matched the description and was then followed until it was stopped in Rolle. When police searched the vehicle, they found a hunting rifle, five live rounds of ammunition and a silencer. The suspect was arrested on the spot,” said Hlathi.
“We want to urge people to continue assisting the police with information that can put criminals behind bars.”
He said the suspect will appear in court soon.
