An EFF member was injured as the party was being kicked out of the North West legislature on Friday during the State of the Province Address (Sopa).
An ambulance had to be called to take Fikile Oorman to the hospital while other party members furiously fought with the legislature security.
This happened just five minutes after the North West premier Job Mokgoro started delivering Sopa.
Before the attack, EFF’s secretary Papiki Babuile rose on a point of order seeking clarity on what gave Mokgoro the authority to address the people while the province was placed under section 100 (1b).
The North West speaker Sussana Dantjie told him to walk out of the sitting as he was disrupting the sitting.
While Babuile and the rest of the party members moved out, party chairman Shakes Botswe also rose on a point of order and refused to leave until five legislature security forcefully took him out.
Outside the chambers, chaos erupted as EFF members and the legislature security began fighting.
“He is in breach of his constitutional obligations. He is failing to give people water, roads, house and scholar transport. We called him three times and he failed to answer,” Botswe said.
Babuile said they will be opening a case of assault.
“We are going to take this matter up with the law enforcement in making sure that those who have assaulted any member they face the mighty law off justice.”
Members of the Democratic Alliance also walked out. Chairman Freddy Sonakele said they walked out because the legislature was meant to be ran democratically but that did not apply.
He said he raised his hand and he was ignored.
“We felt that we were not treated accordingly as members of legislature and that made us to walk out.
He said he wanted the speaker to take the people of the North West into confidence and tell them whether this sitting was legal.
He mentioned section 100 (1b) and said the premier has no powers to be calling the legislature. Meanwhile Mokgoro continued with his speech.
