THE taxi driver who helped deliver a baby in his taxi will be honoured today.

Santaco in KZN said it would hold a ceremony to honour Nhlonipho Zulu (31) at Richards Bay Taxi Rank.

“We will have the celebration at the taxi rank so that other taxi drivers can see there’s a reward when you do good,” said Santaco KZN chairman Boy Zondi.

He didn’t want to disclose the kind of presents they will give Nhlonipho, only saying it would be a surprise.

He said what Nhlonipho did proved that not all taxi drivers were bad people.

“We have good taxi drivers who care for people and we appreciate them because they uplift our image,” said Zondi.

Last week, Nhlonipho gave a heavily pregnant Nontobeko Mthethwa a lift from Hlabisa to KwaNongoma Hospital.

But the expectant mum went into labour before they reached the hospital.

Nhlonipho helped her deliver the baby and has since been hailed as a hero.

Nhlonipho visited Nontobeko and her baby and took photos with the newborn.

Nontobeko was shy to appear in the photos, but said she was grateful to Nhlonipho.

Nhlonipho told Daily Sun:“I’m glad to have finally met the cute bundle of joy.

“I hope God raises him to be a good man.

“I heard about the ceremony.

“I didn’t think this would get so much attention.”

Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane-Zulu hailed Nhlonipho as a hero.
