Summer is here and some places can be hit by heatwaves and endure a prolonged and persistent period of abnormal hot weather posing serious health risks to life and potential summer fire hazards.

The City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Service, wants Sun readers to stay alert and informed in dealing with a heat wave.

The Ekurhuleni EMS spokesman, William Ntladi told Daily Sun that a heatwave may cause dehydration, overheating, heat exhaustion and a heat stroke.

“When dehydrated, make sure you rest the under the shade, dress lightly and brighter colours. Drink a lot of water. If you have any painful cramps, stretch and massage your muscles,” said Ntladi.

Ntladi said when dealing with heat exhaustion, go to a shady place or an air-conditioned room.

He also advices Sun Readers to remove any tight or unnecessary clothing.

“When dealing with a heat strike, prompt cooling will bring core body temperature and brain back to normality within an hour “Cold water immersion” said Ntaldi.

“Seek prompt medical intervention as soon as possible. Make sure you avoid sugary, sweetened drinks, alcohol and caffeine because they will cause increased urination and electrolyte loss,” he added.
