ALTHOUGH there’s only two weeks left until some parts of Mzansi move to level 3 of lockdown, it seems the desperation to access booze has taken its toll on thugs.

According to cops, a security guard at the Pick n Pay liquor store at Berea Centre in Durban was held at gunpoint at about 5am this morning.

The armed thugs smashed the glass door and packed various types of booze into their vehicle before fleeing the scene.

In his last address to the nation last week, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the country was going to move to level 3, where most businesses will be allowed to resume operations.

In terms of level 3, liquor will be sold on a takeaway basis and only on specific days.

Police spokeswoman Captain Nqobile Gwala said a case of armed business robbery was opened at Umbilo cop shop. She said one of the suspects threatened the guard with a firearm, before they broke the glass door of the store.

They took various types liquor from the business premises before fleeing the scene in their getaway vehicle. She said police haven’t received information on the value of the stolen items because the shop management was still counting the losses.

Attempts by Daily Sun to get comment from the shop or the centre management failed.
