MICHAEL Abrahams would appreciate an early Christmas gift.
The 11-year-old is in need of a wheelchair, as his old one is no longer comfortable and causes him pain.
Michael has a condition called Hydrocephalus, which is a build-up of fluid in the cavities deep within the brain.
His mother, Cheryl Brecht (50) from Noordgesig near Soweto, said that her son couldn’t do anything by himself.
“He can’t sit, crawl, stand or speak. He can only say ‘mama’. He’s a baby who’s just getting taller and taller.”
Cheryl said the wheelchair Michael has been using was from six years ago and he had outgrown it.
“Michael can’t balance himself, he just slides out of the chair. I have to use scarves to balance him and fasten him tight to the chair.
“It has become dangerous for me to travel with him because anything can happen,” she said.
She said they use public transport for Michael’s visits to the hospital and she fears for his safety.
“It’s a distance for us to walk to the taxis and this old wheelchair doesn’t make things any easier I beg anyone who can help us with a chair to help us. It will be the greatest Christmas present,” she said.
Cheryl said they applied for a new wheelchair at the hospital, but the process was taking too long.
She pleaded with SunReaders to lend a helping hand in getting Michael new wheels. “My child is already going through a lot, I just want him to be comfortable. He spends most of his time sitting in that chair. “I ask anyone to donate a chair to him. I know he will be happy. I can’t afford to buy it myself and it pains me,” she said.
