The ANC national executive committee (NEC) has decided to recall President Jacob Zuma at its marathon meeting in Irene on Monday.
According to the SABC, Zuma has reportedly been given 48 hours to resign as state president or be recalled.
The NEC took a decision to recall Zuma as state president during a meeting that went on into the early hours of Tuesday morning in Irene.
Other reports say Zuma has asked for three months' "notice" after which he will resign unconditionally, but the proposal was rejected by the NEC.
The ANC is expected to brief the media on the outcomes of the special NEC meeting on Tuesday at noon.
Opposition parties also called for the dissolution of parliament if Zuma is removed through a scheduled EFF motion of no confidence.
Seven parties agreed that they will ask National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete to urgently move the EFF's motion, scheduled for February 22, up to this week.
