A 37-YEAR-OLD woman from Ivory Park, near Tembisa in Ekurhuleni, stopped a car, thinking it was a local taxi.
However, to her dismay, once inside the driver turned on her and raped her.
Ivory Park police station spokesman Captain Bernard Matimulane, said that instead of the taxi taking her to her destination, the driver allegedly changed direction.
“He told her he feared the taxi patrol squad. He then stopped the car and locked the doors. He took out a screwdriver and threatened the woman into giving in to his demands,” said Matimulane.
He said the woman was forced to take off her clothes. She was raped and her cellphone was stolen.
Three days after the incident, the alert woman noticed a man who looked like her rapist driving a different car and took the car’s registration number.
“She took the details to the local taxi rank office, where officials called the driver. He was promptly pointed out by the woman,” said Matimulane.
He said police were called and during questioning the suspect confessed.
“The victim’s attention to detail assisted us in bringing the alleged rapist and robber to book. The fact that she was able to memorise his looks despite the horror she was being subjected to deserves to be complimented,” said Matimulane.
The suspect is expected to appear at Tembisa Magistrates Court soon on charges of theft and rape.
