WORKERS at colleges around the country will go on strike on Valentine’s Day on Thursday.
The National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union yesterday said it would be striking at all technical and vocational, community education and training colleges.
In Tshwane, general secretary Zola Saphetha said they had tried to speak to Higher Education Minister Naledi Pandor about workers’ challenges but their complaints fell on deaf ears. “The union had meetings with the department to resolve our issues but there were no positive results.”
He said they’ve organised workers from 50 technical colleges and 300 community colleges. “Our members are ready to send a strong message to the department. They will no longer tolerate horrible working conditions.”
Saphetha said members have been patient since 2015 but are gatvol.
He said they told students they could attend colleges on Thursday but there wouldn’t be lectures and the students agreed because they had grievances.
“We won’t disrupt anyone when our strike starts and have also told members not to damage property,” he said.
