MOTORISTS driving to and from KwaMashu on Queen Nandi Drive had a hard time yesterday.
Angry residents blockaded both lanes with burning tyres.
Motorist Njabulo Gasa said he was nearly late for work after cops told him to use an alternative route.
“I was halfway on my way to work but had to use other roads.”
Ntokozo Mathaba, who was travelling in a taxi, said she was late for work.
“I reached KwaMashu Taxi Rank at 7.30am, which is when I usually catch a taxi. The driver used a different route, but there was lots of traffic.
“Instead of arriving at work at 7.45am, I arrived at 8.15am.”
KZN police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane said the protesters were angry following the death of a resident in Kenville on Sunday.
Residents said a group of shop owners were to blame.
Zwane said about 100 people apparently attacked tuck shop owners in Greenwood Park.
“The shop owners opened fire, fatally wounding a 22-year-old man in the neck,” he said.
“They also injured two others, who were rushed to hospital. Tuck shops were looted and burned by protesters, and vehicles were stoned.
“Two counts of attempted murder, murder and public violence were opened. Two suspects were bust for public violence.”
