HOME Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba met his Lesotho counterpart Tsukutla Au to discuss introducing free movement between the countries.
They met at the Maseru Bridge port of entry yesterday.
The aim of the meeting was to discuss migration matters between the two countries and to make going in and out of the two countries easier. All six borders between the two countries have been experiencing delays.
Gigaba said they wanted to work together to make citizens’ lives easier.
“This is the first step towards free movement. We do not want frequent travellers to be burdened with obligations of renewing their passports. The free movement between the two countries will help a lot with the infrastructure we are planning for Maseru and Fickburg bridges.
“This will not just be a facelift, but a massive improvement, which will make it easy for people and vehicles to easily cross between the countries,” said Gigaba.
Au said they were aware of problems at the borders. “We are trying to resolve these problems hand in hand with the South African government,” said Au.
He said that between now and December, they were going to clear the borders of vendors so that people could move freely.
A motorist, Tshidi Lisebo, said: “I think what the ministers are trying to achieve is a good idea.
“The border is a nightmare.”
