AN article about the youngest referee in Gauteng warmed the hearts of many SunReaders.
The story of Thato “Mr Ref” Makgoga (14), which was published yesterday, impressed referee Zakhele Siwela and former whistle man Andrew Mdluli.
But no one was more impressed than professional referee Victor “Victovich” Hlungwani, who called and offered to help the teenager.
Hlungwani couldn’t hide his joy when he spoke to the People’s Paper.
“I felt so good when I read the story in the morning,” he said.
“I’m grateful there’s someone out there who looks up to me. I’m truly humbled.
“This puts more pressure on me to do my best all the time.
“I want to meet that young man and give him all the support he needs.
“I’d also like to buy a kit for him. I’ve just been to a sports shop to check prices.”
He said it was a pity that his own size won’t fit him.
Hlungwani promised to give Thato videos, a new whistle, soccer boots and yellow and red cards. The referee said it was a good idea for Thato to start polishing his skills at an early age.
He encouraged other young people to give refereeing a shot.
Mdluli, who’s a refereeing appointment co-ordinator and match commissioner at the Alexandra Local Football Association, said they received some encouraging news from Siwela.
Mdluli said Siwela, who has just returned from the World Cup in Russia, promised to train Thato.
Thato impressed players and spectators when he took command of the 21st Maimane Alfred Phiri Games at Alexandra Stadium on Sunday. He had no problem flashing yellow cards.
