STRUGGLE hero Moses Mabhida’s grave has been vandalised!

His family accused the Msunduzi Municipality in Pietermaritzburg of not taking care of the late SACP secretary general’s grave at Heroes Acre in Imbali.

His daughter Thuthukile (63) told Daily Sun those in power should be ashamed of themselves.

“Our father gave up his life for the liberation of this country and died away from the land of his birth.

“The least that can be done is to ensure his final resting place is in good condition.

Thuthukile said her family learned of the vandalism six months ago.

“We don’t know who removed the tombstone because there is a guard there, 24 hours a day,” she said.

When the SunTeam visited Heroes’ Acre, there was a guard and the grass had recently been cut.

The guard pointed out Mabhida’s grave, which didn’t have a tombstone.

Municipal spokeswoman Thobeka Mafumbatha said they were aware of the state of the cemetery.

The tourism unit had done an audit on heritage sites regarding maintenance and development.

“In the meantime, there are security personnel stationed at the cemetery for extra control,” she said.

“However, we realised we may need extra support.”
