TAXIMAN SHOT ON LOCAL KASI ROAD

accreditation

A TAXI driver was shot dead hardly a week after two other people were killed on the same road.

The driver was murdered on Sunday while two security guards were killed and a taxi official left wounded on Thursday in an incident thought to be related to taxi violence.

Both incidents occurred on Ndaba Road in Tsakane, Ekurhuleni.

According to Tsakane police spokeswoman Sergeant Lerato Mngomezulu, a silver Yaris with male passengers stopped in front of the Quantum taxi.

“The driver of the Yaris got out and came straight to the driver and shot him on the neck before speeding off,” she said.

Mngomezulu said the 26-year-old taxi driver was with a 34-year-old woman, who was injured during the shooting, as well as another passenger who escaped unharmed.

“The passenger and the driver were taken to hospital. Sadly, the driver died on arrival,” she said.

She said the unharmed passenger jumped out of the taxi and fled.

Nearby residents said they no longer felt safe as taxi drivers were targeted on the same road.

Resident Victor Nkuna said: “We fear we may be caught up in their fight and wish they could resolve their differences.”

Mngomezulu said the motive for the killing is still unknown and the suspects are at large.

Police are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder.
