THE newly appointed vice-chancellor of the University of Cape Town, Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng, has big plans for her new job.
After her appointment on Saturday, she said: “My goal is to transform the university while building its excellence.”
Outgoing vice-chancellor Max Price said Phakeng’s appointment should be seen as a renewal.
“The university has come through a very stormy period over the last few years and the job of a vice-chancellor is difficult,” he said.
“We are reaching a period of stability and her appointment is appropriate in light of our renewal.”
Professor Phakeng was the first black woman in South Africa to obtain a PhD in maths education and has published over 80 research papers. She joined the university in 2016 and took over as deputy vice-chancellor of research last year.
Phakeng acknowledged the task ahead of her
“I know the task that lies ahead is a mammoth one and I don’t underestimate its complexities. But in every challenge we face there are also opportunities,” she said.
“I also know that alongside all the members of the campus community, we will meet the challenges and reach even higher milestones.”
Student Nomusa Dube said it was an opportunity for women to prove they could rise above any circumstance.
