A TORRENT of water has blocked part of a busy road in Port Elizabeth, making it difficult for vehicles and residents to use it.
Part of Kalendula Street in Motherwell NU11 has been flooded by the water coming from a construction site in NU30.
Residents said this has been happening for the past two years.
Rufus Mondi (41) said: “This problem started two years ago, when underground pipes were being installed in NU30.
“We cannot use that part of the road. People have to go around it to cross over. The water also attracts mosquitoes and frogs that come into our houses,” said Rufus.
Athengosi Jimlongo (25), a jikeleza taxi driver, told Daily Sun: “I only go into that area when I am not busy. Why would I waste my time on a busy day taking passengers there when there are other places which have better roads?”
Nelson Mandela Bay Municipal spokesman Mthubanzi Mniki said: “The water referred to has been traced to a construction site in the NU30 area, where the contractor has encountered natural underground water.”
He said the water is being pumped into a storm water retention pond.
“It then flows along an open canal which crosses Kalendula Street.
“No major water leaks could be found and it is anticipated the problem will be solved once infrastructure is fully installed in the area.”
