EVEN though they find it hard to accept the loss of their father, Mbongeni Mgenge’s kids are grateful he will be buried in a dignified manner.
The 58-year-old sangoma from Mtwalume, on the south coast, drowned at Sezela Beach on Friday with his thwasa, Ntombodidi Mavume (60). The two had gone to the beach to perform the final ritual in Ntombodidi’s training process.
Mbongeni’s daughter Makhosazane (34) told Daily Sun: “I was also there when the incident happened. When I first saw a wave washing them into the sea, I didn’t worry as my dad has been doing this since 1997.”
Makhosazane said when she realised the two were drowning, she started calling for help. Their bodies were later found by the police in different areas.
SA Traditional Healers’ Association president Sazi Mhlongo said: “The incident could have been caused by the ancestors’ anger about something. I advise both families to make sure they go to the sea to collect the spirits of the dead and end this bad omen.”
Colonel Thembeka Mbele said cops opened an inquest docket and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
