A 16-YEAR-OLD girl and her brother (7) were killed when a rock fell from a bridge between Ballito and Tongaat.
The two were in a car with their father, the driver, when the rock hit the windscreen. The driver was not injured.
The accident happened along the N2 freeway in Umhlali, Durban, on Wednesday.
IPSS spokesman Paul Herbst said: “We received a call for an accident on the N2 northbound lane between Ballito and Tongaat in Umhlali on Wednesday night.
“While we were rushing to the scene we received another call, saying the driver was travelling towards the hospital in Ballito.”
They then rushed to the hospital to help the victims.
“Unfortunately, the victims were declared dead on arrival at the hospital,” Herbst told the People’s Paper.
KZN police spokeswoman Captain Nqobile Gwala said: “Umhlali police have opened an inquest docket for investigation.
“The current reports state that the rock fell from the bridge on to the car, but it is still not clear how it fell or what was the cause of the fall.”
