THE couple had gone to visit their son on the other side of the river on Sunday.

When time came for them to go home, their son tried to get them to stay.

It was raining, but they insisted they had to go.

They were found dead the next day on the river bank in Olievenhoutbosch near Midrand.

They were walking from extension 19 and going to extension 60.

Pauline Mohamme (49) and her husband Fanney Thabethe (52) died horrible deaths.

Their son Michael Mohamme (32) said: “I told them to sleep over but they refused. Look what has happened now.”

The community reacted with anger.

Resident Bongi Nkosi (47) said: “Last year a man was swept away. Luckily he held onto a rock and was saved by the community.

“We need to cross to the other side to go to the shops. Our children cross the same bridge to school.”

Ward councillor Sipho Maila said there were plans to fix the bridge.

Inquest dockets were opened.
