MUTSHA Primary School pupils were left shocked after one of their school mates was electrocuted on Wednesday.

Pupils and staff at the school outside Thohoyandou, Limpopo were horrified to learn that six-year-old pupil Vhuthuhawe Madala of Ha Mutsha Village was electrocuted while playing at school.

The incident happened after school at 13.20pm.

Vhuthuhawe was electrocuted by an electric cable mounted on the wall.

The cable was probably faulty as emergency staff removing her body were also shocked.

Eskom personnel checked for an electrical fault as police and school management, including the circuit manager and residents, flocked to the scene.

SGB member Muvhulawa Netshimboni said it was the first time that such an incident had happened at the school.

“We are still in shock, as this took us by surprise.

“This is a new block and the cable in question is well protected.

“We are still trying to figure out what happened.

“As management, we decided to have all electrical connections at the school checked to avoid a repeat of what happened.”

Limpopo Education MEC Ishmael Kgetjepe said they learnt with shock of the grade R pupil’s death and sent their deepest heartfelt condolences to the family.

“This is no easy matter for the family, the department or the school community. No amount of words can ever soothe the pain of losing a young loved life.”

Kgetjepe said they are working closely with the department of social development and social workers who will be counselling the family, pupils and teachers s at the school to cope with the tragedy.

“Our investigations will also try to understand fully the circumstances that led to this tragic incident,” said Kgetjepe.
