LOCAL bus companies have stopped all trips to Zimbabwe.
This comes after violent protests started in the country due to steep fuel price increases.
Phillip Nhira, a bus operator at Powerhouse in Joburg, said it was a safety precaution and operations would continue when the situation was calmer.
A number of bus companies at Park Station, Powerhouse and Newtown in Joburg, confirmed they had suspended operations.
Tafira Hondova, a manager at a bus company in Park Station, yesterday said: “We have been turning away passengers since early morning.”
Zimbabweans who could not travel to Zimbabwe for the December holiday as a result of traffic jams at the Beitbridge border were once again left disappointed.
Nokuthula Moyo from Bulawayo said: “I thought this was the best time to visit home but now there are no buses.”
International Cross-Border Traders Association president Denis Juru said no buses would set off until further notice.
- Meanwhile, a Zimbabwean military helicopter yesterday fired teargas at demonstrators blocking a road and burning tyres in Harare.
Witnesses also reported violence in the eastern city of Mutare, where passenger buses were attacked and some shops were destroyed.
