WHILE citizens right across Mzansi were enjoying braais over the long weekend, the Tshivhase family had to deal with another kind of fire.

The family from Power Park, Soweto lost everything when their house was gutted by fire.

“Early on Friday we woke up to the sound of my daughter screaming,” said Dolly Tshivhase.

She said they saw smoke coming from her brother’s room.

“My brother has been in Venda for more than a week and the room was locked until I opened it to put out the fire,” she said.

She said they tried to extinguish the blaze, but it spread too quickly.

“Neighbours did their best to help, but we could not save the house. By the time firefighters arrived there was nothing left. We still do not know what caused the fire.”

Disaster management officials visited the family and donated beds, clothing and food.

“We do not know what will happen when it all runs out,” Dolly said.

“We are pleading for help from anyone who can assist us. We will take anything, from bricks and cement to wooden beams.

“Anything would be highly appreciated,” she said.
