IT WAS a sad day in block MM, Soshanguve in Tshwane on Saturday.

Murdered Mpho Baloyi (24) and her niece Mphonyana Baloyi (19) were laid to rest.

On 11 January Mpho’s lover stabbed and battered the two of them to death with a hammer.

He killed them after picking them up at Mpho’s home and saying he wanted her to fetch her clothes.

Daily Sun published the story of the killings that sent chills down residents’ spines on Friday. The man called Mpho’s mum, Joyce Baloyi (53), to inform her of his gruesome deed and told her he intended to also kill the women’s children, aged two and three.

The kids were rescued by the killer’s gogo, who heard them in his Winterveld shack and he was arrested.

Saturday’s funeral turned into a cultural and religious affairwhen sangomas and pastors got involved in the burial.

While priests prayed at the funeral, sangomas performed rituals to lay the spirits of the women to rest.

The traditional healers went to the Winterveld shack where the two were killed to collect their spirits.

On their return, the men of God said short prayers at the gate before sending them off to their last resting place at the local graveyard.

Joyce told the paper she wished the police would hand the suspect over to her so she could deal with him herself.

The man will appear in court for the third time next Wednesday.
