THE body of the man who drowned in the Vaal River in Vereeniging on Saturday has been found.

The man was spotted by local fishermen as he calmly took off his clothes and walked into the river.

The fishermen alerted the cops when they realised, after a while, that he had not resurfaced.

His belongings – which included a cellphone, blue jeans, a pink jacket with a ZCC church badge and brown safety boots – were found on the river bank.

Police divers were called in to search without success.

The body was seen floating in the river on Tuesday afternoon.

Daily Sun reported recently that the Vaal River has become a hot spot for churches who perform cleansing and baptismal ceremonies.

Vereeniging police spokesman Captain Fikile Funda confirmed that the man’s body was recovered and an inquest docket has been opened at the Vereeniging cop shop.

“Our divers found the body of an unknown man not far from where he went into the river.

“We are going to use his cellphone to try and trace his next-of-kin because he has not yet been unidentified.”
