A man has been arrested for the alleged murder of his 88-year-old mother in Ngqamakhwe, Eastern Cape, police said on Saturday.
Police spokesperson Captain Jackson Manatha said the 55-year-old man was arrested at their home in Ngcwazi village in Ngqamakhwe.
Manatha said the man struck his mother with an axe after an argument on Friday evening.
His children, who were in a different room, were too afraid to stop him, Manatha said.
"The grandchildren only noticed in the early hours of Saturday that their grandmother had passed away."
The man is expected to appear before the Ngqamakhwe Magistrate Court on Monday.
He is charged with murder.
