A Joburg resident who tried to bribe a City of Joburg official with R5000 will appear at the Jobug Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
The 32 year-old was arrested in Mayfair on Thursday after he tried to bribe an official who was part of “Operation #BuyaMtheto.”
#BuyaMtheto was launched by the City of Joburg in an attempt to disconnect water and electricity that has been connected illegally, and to enforce the City’s bylaws.
The suspect was believed to have owned a property that owes R900 000 in rates and services.
When officials arrived at his property, they discovered that the electricity was illegally connected.
The suspect offered one of the officials R5000 to stop him from disconnecting the electricity.
After a trap was set up, the suspect was arrested.
He is detained at the Joburg Central Police Station in Joburg.
City Mayor Herman Mashaba said that he has instructed the JMPD to monitor the properties where the illegal connections have been severed.
Seven pople have been arrested since the operation was launched early this week.
