KIDS are exposed to a horrific death trap whenever they play near uncovered storm water drains.

On Friday a group of young boys in Motherwell kasi in Port Elizabeth were seen hanging over dangerous storm water drains.

The big drains, located between NU1 and NU4, are about one metre deep with a stream of water running down them.

Some of the boys had their legs swinging above the open holes, while others had their heads down, looking inside them.

The boys said they like to play here because they do not have toys.

One of the boys told Daily Sun: “Sometimes we watch the snails moving with the stream.”

It is believed the drain lids were stolen a long time ago by thieves to sell at scrapyards.

Resident Nozuko Mabe (56) said: “All our kasis are like this.

“Every time I see these kids playing here, I warn them to be careful.”

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality was alerted about the tragedy which is just waiting to happen.

Municipal spokesman Mthubanzi Mniki said: “Thank you for alerting us. We will ask the relevant people to take care of the problem.”
