NOMBULELO Molefe hasn’t been able to sleep for two months after her three-month-old baby Ntando was stolen.

The 24-year-old from Pietermaritzburg said Ntando was stolen while she was at Home Affairs in May.

She said she left Ntando with a woman she knew but she vanished with her baby.

Nombulelo told Daily Sun she met the woman, whom she knew as Fikile from Ashdown, at the clinic last year.

“She was friendly and we got along. We exchanged numbers. I showed her my baby after I gave birth.

“She told me she also gave birth to a baby girl. I then told her I was struggling to get a birth certificate for my baby as I don’t have one.”

Nombulelo said Fikile promised to help her get her birth certificate.

“We arranged to meet in May. She said she would find someone with the same surname as me,” she said.

She said they arranged to meet at Home Affairs on 16 May. “I was told to do an affidavit at the police station and Fikile accompanied me.

“Outside, I realised I left my baby’s blanket and went to fetch it. When I returned, she was gone with my baby.”

Nombulelo said she called Fikile but her phone was off.

“I think she was fooling me all along as she wanted to steal my baby,” she said.

Captain Nqobile Gwala said a case of kidnapping was opened at Pietermaritzburg Police Station.

“Anyone with information should call Warrant Officer Xolani Zaca on 079 500 0386,” she said.
