THE Emergency Management Services were ready to respond to calls during this week’s heat wave.

Joburg spokesman Robert Mulaudzi said they would make sure they respond swiftly to any emergency.

This comes after the South African Weather Service warned that most parts of Gauteng would experience high temperatures throughout the week. Temperatures are expected to reach 36°C.

“The heat wave means that we will be exposed to temperatures that can lead to heat cramps, exhaustion or heat stroke.

“Winds raise the threat of veld fires so don’t leave fires unattended or throw burning cigarette butts on dry grass.

Heat wave safety tips

  • Keep indoors if possible
  • Drink water and wear light clothing
  • Children must wear hats and sunscreen at all times
  • Stay away from direct sunlight especially between 11am and 3pm
  • Don’t leave kids or pets in vehicles
  • Take frequent breaks if you are working outdoors
  • Avoid booze, caffeine or fizzy drinks.

“Children should stay away from rivers, streams and dams. Take them to public pools with life guards to watch them.”
