A DAY after five cops and a former solider were gunned down by armed robbers, operations at Ngcobo Police Station continued.

Cops from the station and colleagues from other cop shops sang outside the premises.

Top cops, municipal officials, acting Thembu king Azenathi Dalindyebo and ANC provincial chair Oscar Mabuyane met earlier at the municipal chambers.

Popcru chairman Colonel Loyiso Mdingi blamed police bosses for the killing.

He said they had ignored warnings that thugs would target cop shops.

“We saw this coming and warned the provincial police commissioner.”

Mdingi mentioned incidents over the past two years where thugs targeted cop shops:

  • The 13 firearms and cars stolen from Ngangelizwe in Mthatha last year.
  • The 30 firearms stolen from Peddie Police Station some months earlier.

Ngcobo station commander Colonel Vukile Ntuli said between 15 and 20 armed men stormed the Ngcobo cop shop and stole 10 firearms.

He was off duty when the attack happened.

The murdered cops are:

  • Zuko Mbini (45)
  • Zuko Ntsheku (38)
  • Nkosiphenduke Pongco (32)
  • Sibongiseni Sandlana (32)
  • Kuhle Mateta (27)

A high-level task team including the Hawks has been put together to find those responsible for the attack.
