“The safety and security of our customers’ information is, and remains, our top priority.”

This is according to Liberty Group CEO Munro.

This comes after news that Liberty Life Group was reportedly hacked over the weekend emerged.

The CEO held a press briefing at their offices in Braamfontein, Joburg on Sunday regarding the investigation into the hacking saga.

It is alleged that hackers threatened Liberty to release classified information of some of their clients, demanding an undisclosed amount for ransom.

“It’s important to me to take this step to reassure you that we are on top of the situation, and working hard to ensure that we protect our customers,” he said.

Munro also answered questions that have been fielded to Liberty by concerned customers, financial advisors, employees and the media.

“We are in the middle of a criminal investigation, so please do bear with us.

“It would not be appropriate for us to share sensitive information at this stage,” he also said.

Munro, at the press briefing, confirmed that Liberty has fallen victim to “illegal and unauthorized access to our IT infrastructure.”

He also said that an external party has taken data from them and demanded payment.

Munroe said that Liberty was alerted to the hacking incident late on Thursday (14 June).

“We immediately convened a team of specialists which included IT specialists and security specialists to investigate the incident, prioritizing the protection of our customers’ details and our systems,” he said.

“As soon as we were able, we informed our customers via emails, smses, and as you know via our statement to the media.

“Our team of IT and security personnel have devoted all their efforts around the clock to ensure that we live up to our duty of care, to protect our customers and their details,” he also said.
