PATIENTS at this hospital are made to sleep on beds in the corridor.
Renovations in ward 7 have apparently been ongoing for two years!
Patients and concerned visitors at Far East Rand Hospital in Ekurhuleni told Daily Sun that frail lives are in serious danger.
A source at the hospital said a patient with multi-drug-resistant TB was being kept with other patients, instead of being isolated.
Close contact with such patients potentially spreads infection.
The source said psychiatric patients, who were only meant to stay in the ward for 72 hours, had been kept there since January.
There are also complaints about overcrowding, with some of the patients having to sleep on hard, stone-cold benches and couches in the visiting area.
They allegedly bring their own blankets to keep warm.
A family said they had laid a complaint with hospital management, but it fell on deaf ears.
Visitor Elinah Madi (63) from Daveyton in Ekurhuleni told the People’s Paper she didn’t like what she saw when she visited her beloved brother recently.
She said she was worried about his condition!
“I don’t like where they put him,” said Elinah.
It’s extremely cold, and he’s not the only one suffering.”
“We took my brother to the hospital last week and I visited him on Sunday.”
Gauteng health spokesman Prince Hamca said the department would send a team to investigate the shocking allegations.
Hamca said: “If the allegations are found to be true, we’ll make necessary interventions to ensure patient care is not compromised.”
