FANS across Mzansi are feeling the death of musician Johnny Clegg.
Popularly known as Juluka, hostel dwellers celebrated his life by playing his music and dancing.
The SunTeam visited a number of hostels yesterday, including Mzimhlophe Hostel and Nancefield in Soweto.
Many fans expressed shock and sadness at his passing.
Jabulani Mlangeni (49) said he started following Juluka’s work after he saw him perform at a Joburg stadium.
“You could see the love in his eyes when he played our music. I was surprised that a white man could play music as if it was his own,” he said.
Johnny died on Tuesday aged 66 after a lengthy battle with pancreatic cancer.
Philani Miya (49) said: “It’s funny how we lose almost all the white people who have learnt and entertained us in our language. We will never have such people again.”
Fundi Magubane (38) said they didn’t have electricity and hadn’t heard about Juluka’s death.
But she sang one of his songs and danced.
“I love how he mixed with black people when many white people discriminated against us,” she said.
