A MAN wearing a bullet-proof vest was found dead next to a cop van at the scene of a cash-in-transit robbery yesterday.
It happened on the road between the University of Mpumalanga and Kamagugu in Mbombela.
Two passersby were apparently rushed to hospital after they were caught in the crossfire.
Residents heard gunshots and a huge explosion in the early hours of the morning.
Cops said the suspects, believed to have been travelling in a Mercedes-Benz and BMW, rammed their vehicle into an SBV van, which they later bombed.
The suspects escaped with an undisclosed amount of money. The white BMW X5 was abandoned on the KaMagugu road.
Cops spokesman Brigadier Leonard Hlathi said cops were investigating whether the dead was indeed a
real cop.
“We’re searching for the suspects,” he said.
