The National Assembly has elected Cyril Ramaphosa as the new South African President on Thursday.
Ramaphosa was a sole nominee for the position of president.
He takes over from Jacob Zuma who resigned from the position on Wednesday night.
National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete wished Ramaphosa strength and fortitude.
Zuma is the second successive ANC president to resign as head of state, after former president Thabo Mbeki stepped down in 2008.
Zuma made his announcement an hour before midnight, which was set as his deadline to resign by the ANC.
He took to the podium at the Union Buildings in Pretoria for the last time as head of state late on Wednesday night.
