Musician Babes Wodumo went live on Instagram, where the whole nation saw her boyfriend and manager Mampintsha rain blows on her.
This sent shockwaves throughout the country, with people calling for action to be taken against Mampintsha.
But according to cops, anyone who is abused has to come forward and open a case and cannot be forced.
Babes, whose real name is Bongekile Simelane, took to Instagram in the most graphic way to show the extent of Mampintsha’s abuse to her.
In the video, Mampintsha is seen slapping and striking her numerous times.
While social media users have been calling for Mampintsha to be arrested, Police spokesman Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said that a case can’t be opened on someone’s behalf.
He said that only in the case of a minor can a case be opened on someone else’s behalf.
“An adult can make his or her decision,” he said.
“If the assault takes place in front of a police officer, an officer can act.”
He said that adults being physically assaulted must make their own decisions on whether they want to take further action.
“If somebody is beating you up, you must make your own decision. Let’s say you quarrel and are involved in a fight, both of you must decide whether you can open a case or not,” he said.
